  • When my dad died, my siblings and I chose Coopers because we had been to calling hours for others there and thought the atmosphere calm and soothing, even in situations when we were mourning children who had passed away. So it was not a hard decision.

But we had no idea what a good decision it was until we experienced firsthand the whole process. My siblings and I--four of us--had to make all the arrangements on our own, because nothing was in place. This does not bode well for a smooth process....and yet somehow, with Jake's calm confidence, kindness, and real sympathy in his eyes, we planned a memorial service and funeral right there at Cooper's that was perfect.

I know it is odd to call a funeral perfect. How can it be? It's awful and heartbreaking. But we truly had people leaving saying, "I've never been to a funeral like that before." I had one friend say, "I'm so sorry but is it okay for me to take pictures? Everything is just so.. beautiful. He would have been so honored....and so amazed that you did this for him."

"This" referred to the tables we had out with pictures, mementos, and flowers in multiple rooms...so that family and friends could grieve together or apart, in small groups or large. "This" referred to the 21 gun salute that Coopers arranged with the local Veterans' associations. "This" was the slide show playing with the pictures we selected and the music we chose...which each of us were given on DVD to take home afterwards.

We had out of town relatives that had never been to a funeral home like Coopers. A place where the caretakers not only held the door for them, but also hung their coats as well. If it's raining, they will walk you to your car and hold an umbrella above your head and help you into the car. The sense of being kindness and love envelopes you there.

When you have a meltdown with your family at various points in the planning and preparation (you will), they will not judge you. Jake looked at us with kindness only. He did not drip with false sympathy. He waited for the moment to pass, and then he offered to help. And he solved all of our minor crises. (Dumb things. "Dad would hate that table! It's too small! You can't see his books!" and Jake said quietly, "What if I get a longer table and put it over here?" Crisis averted. One of many such moments, all of which he solved seamlessly.

My point is that, when death strikes, you or your family might have an image in your mind of what the funeral and calling hours are supposed to look like.

A place like Coopers? They will make that picture in your mind a reality. And both Tim and Jake will always treat you with respect, as neighbor and friend, during your time of deepest grief and beyond, every single time you see them, back in the real world.

Medina is blessed to have a place like Cooper Funeral Home in their midst.

I cannot recommend it highly enough.
